Newtown Bypass Renamed in Slain Officer’s Honor

On Tuesday in Newtown a large portion of the Newtown Bypass was renamed “Officer Gregg Memorial Bypass” in remembrance of Officer Brian Gregg who was killed in the line of duty from a fatal gunshot in 2005.

The ceremony was held Tuesday morning at Borough Hall in Newtown.  During the event a portion of State Street in Newtown was closed for the ceremony.

“I think it is great they’re continuing his legacy by renaming the bypass,” said Bucks student Amber Brodecki, 22, an education major from Bensalem.

More than 100 people, plus many local, county, state and federal officials and police from departments all across Bucks County, were in attendance.

The exact stretch of road being renamed is roughly a mile from the bypass intersection of South State Street to the intersection with Durham Road in Newtown Township.

“I drive all along that road for work so I’ll be glad to see his remembrance signs during my commute,” said Colorado State University Online student Samantha Wytish, 25, a business major from Penndel.

Currently there is only one sign that has been put up but PennDOT officals said many more will be incoming and on their way in the coming weeks.

U.S. Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick was in attendance for the dedication and had kind words to say about his legacy.  Fitzpatrick said, “For those lost in the line of duty, like Officer Gregg, we must recognize their commitment each day.  The renaming of this highway will serve as a daily reminder for thousands of people of the important role our first responders play locally and nationally.”

Gregg was doing his job on Sept. 29, 2005 when he and his partner, James Warunek, arrested Robert Flor for driving while intoxicated and assault against his girlfriend.  The officers took the man to St. Mary Medical Center for routine urine and blood tests when Flor grabbed Warunek’s gun and shot and killed Gregg.

Flor has since been sentenced to death row.
