Hicks Displays Pop Art as History Lesson

Hicks Displays Pop Art as History Lesson

Where can you find original art legends that became famous pop icons like the Coca-Cola bear and Uncle Sam? Would you know where to look to find the first painting that adorned the most famous romance novel covers?

The answer, it turns out, is right here at Bucks’ Hicks Art Center gallery.

“An Historical look at Visual Communication” is a display on loan from the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators in New York.

Thanks to Hicks’ director, Fran Orlando, this non-profit organization’s traveling exhibition has arrived at Bucks for all to see.

Illustrators from the 20th century have had a huge impact on society. Their styles and techniques are largely seen today.

Some artists featured, include Rockwell Kent whose work has appeared in ads for Roles-Royce, Simms, and Campbell, as well as popular men’s magazine, Esquire.

Gary Kelly and Jack Davis’ cartoons appeared in Playboy.

Rolling Stone magazine has printed work from Edward Sorel.

Al Parker has worked with Cosmopolitan.

James Montgomery Flagg’s best known illustration is the famous Uncle Sam “I want you” poster.

Haddon Hubbard Sundblom is best known for the annual Coca-Cola bear.

The age of some of the artwork is barely significant in its appreciation.

“It looks like a camera took this, that’s how good it is,” said Lisa Scholle, an 18 year old Pennsbury high school senior.

“An Historical Look at Visual Communication” is on display at Hicks Art gallery from Jan. 21- Feb. 25, Monday and Friday 9 a.m.- 4 p.m., and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 9 a.m.- 8 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to Noon.

Don’t let this fantastic artwork come and go before you realize it’s already March.
