Transfer Center Helps Students Prepare for Life After College

The Transfer Center gears up for the new school year with advice for current students on how to transfer to a four-year college .

“We help students identify a major and then aid in finding a college that is the best option,” said Vicki Mansure, a counselor at the center.

Counselors advise students to focus on taking core requirements for their majors and avoid taking empty electives which will not transfer over to four-year colleges. These core requirements vary depending on majors and different schools. Along with receiving the number of credits required for transfer, courses taken also specified GPA requirements. For a majority of schools the minimum GPA is from 2.0-3.0.

One of the major tips offered by the Transfer Center is to make sure most of the credits received at Bucks can transfer over to the next school the student wishes to attend.

“It is good for students to stop by and get acquainted with the information we have available. It does get busy here,” said Barbara Ford, Coordinator of Transfer. Ford encourages students to come into the center and get familiar with its resources.

Bucks student Jeff Paric was unsure about transferring but after visiting the center he had a better idea of what was necessary. “I was a little confused about the whole transfer process, but after going to the transfer center everything became clear on what I need to do if I decide to transfer. I have a better idea of what to take and what to avoid.”

This is Paric’s first year at Bucks and he admits that there were a lot of things that were hard to understand about accomplishing his goals. “I came in with an open mind on transferring, but I was happy to know that if I actually do end up transferring, I will have all I need. There is plenty of material that’s helpful in explaining how to transfer.”

Students transferring out of Bucks go on to attend numerous colleges nationwide. However, the most common choice is Temple University. “This is not only because we have a transfer agreement with Temple, but also because it is one of the lower costing colleges for transferring students,” said Ford.

The Transfer Center does much more than assisting students with transferring to other colleges. Working in conjunction with the Career Center, tips for occupational majors can be found in the Transfer Center as well. Occupational majors are for students planning to be employed immediately after receiving their Associates Degree from Bucks.

For more information, students can stop in during the fall semester. Brochures, catalogs and staff members ready to assist them in moving onto the next step in their collegiate career.
