Academic team is looking for students who want to compete

Bucks is looking for students to
compete for a place on the All
USA Community College Academic
Team for 2009. The team is sponsored by USA
Today, the Coca-Cola Scholarships
Foundation, the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), and Phi Theta
Kappa International Honor Society.
There will be six nominees, two
from each Bucks campus.
If chosen, the team members
will be eligible to compete for
cash awards and regional and national
recognition.
Students selected for the team
will be recognized at the Commission
for Community Colleges
spring banquet in Harrisburg,
where they will also be invited to
tour the State capitol.
From there, selected students
will be eligible for one of two
final positions on theAll-StateAcademic
Team.
Liz French, 23, a nursing major
from Warminster said, “That
sounds pretty interesting and cool.
I think everyone should have the
opportunity to see their state capital.”
Interested students must demonstrate
academic excellence and
leadership experience.
To be eligible, students must be
enrolled at a community college through Decemver 2009. They
must have a minimum of 36 credits
completed by Dec. 31, 2009
with the intent of having 48 credits
by Aug. 31, 2009.
Part-time and full-time students
may apply, but a minimum cumulative
GPA of a 3.50 in all college
coursework completed in the last
five years is required.
French said, “It’s always nice to
have the chance to get more financial
help for school especially
with the economy these days.”
Students who are interested
must complete an application and
submit a written essay along with
a bulleted list of community activities
and leadership positions
they have had.
The essay should describe a student’s
most significant achievement
since attending community
college. Relevant projects may be in
community service, research, the
arts, or public affairs.
The judges will be looking for
creativity, innovation, original and
lasting achievements. If students are selected they must complete other written
works as well.
