“Leaf” it to the Eco Club this year

Leaf it to the Eco Club this year

The Ecology Club at Bucks wants a cleaner planet, promoting a new water bottle filling station in Rollins Center.  They also participate in community service.
Molly Lichtner is a 19 year old Environmental Science major and also the President of the Ecology Club.   The “Eco Club” is responsible for many charitable causes.
Lichtner tells Centurion “We do fundraising for different groups such as the Churchville Nature Center and Wags Rescue and Referral.”
Lichtner also says, “Overall it’s a group where students can show their love for the environment and the world around us.”
According to Lichtner, the club has about 10 to 12 active members and a typical weekly meeting has around 5 to 7 people.  “We meet in the clubs and orgs offices right outside the cafeteria at 12:30 every Thursday.  We talk about ideas we have for the future, where our current projects are going, and we try to fill people in on what’s been going on.”

Sea Yount, a Biology major at Bucks said, “We gotta go green, if you think about it that’s how we gotta start living…  The Eco club helps promote this.”
Joann Corn, the Eco club’s faculty advisor said, “There seems to be a lot of interest from students, and there has been a small, but active core of members that truly get involved.  Student members have always been the ones to plan the club’s activities.  As the club advisor, I pass on opportunities that come to my attention, and if students are interested, they follow through with planning and executing the activity/event.”
The club is currently working on getting reusable containers in the school’s Cafeteria.  Lichtner stated that Corn has been fundamental in making this project happen.
“There is going to be a beta testing of them.  I’m not sure who is going to be chosen to test them yet but it will be happening, hopefully soon.”
Corn said, “Steve DiSalvio and Matt Cipriano are hoping to meet about this with Eco club members that are willing to specifically help with a pilot project.”
The club is also working to help promote the water bottle filling station outside of the cafeteria.
According to Corn, the Sustainability Team is hoping a second filling station will be installed outside the Bucks bookstore in the near future
Last semester, the Eco club raised money to support a Leopard Gecko at the Churchville Nature Center.  “We named her Martha and she’s super cute.  It was fun… really fun to go out and help a local organization,” said Lichtner.

Two semesters ago the club grew plants in the greenhouse and sold them at the Bucks Bonanza, donating $140 to the money to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, according to Lichtner.
The Eco club is also planning to do a cleanup of Tyler State Park on 18 April, though the times have yet to be arranged.  All students are encouraged to attend.
Students who want to help the club out but can’t make it to the weekly meetings can fill out a club interest form at Student Life and be put on the email list.
Lichtner encourages students to do is to stop using plastic water bottles.  “Get a reusable water bottle.  We have this really cool water bottle filling station outside of the cafeteria now right across from Student Life and it’s pretty neat.”
